High-performance Timber Cladding

Accoya® wood is the result of more than 80 years’ research and development. It has brought together a long-established and extensively proven wood modification technique known as acetylation, with leading-edge proprietary technology, to create a high-performance wood.

Accoya is a fantastic product. Thanks to its stability and durability it can be used in many applications from external cladding to canal linings. Its stability allows it to be secret fixed with little movement if installed correctly.

Radiata Pine Tree

Radiata pine is a versatile evergreen conifer native to southern California and northern Mexico. It is the most widely planted pine in the world and the most popular commercial timber species in New Zealand. It is easily managed; grows quickly; produces useful timber; makes strong wood pulp and tolerates a wide range of terrain from coastal sand dunes to sub-alpine gravels. While seldom required to, it will grow for more than 150 years, reaching 60m in height and more than 2m in diameter.

Timber Source

Produced from the fast grown specie, Radiata Pine, Accoya was first was produced with timber sourced from New Zealand. It was then shipped to Holland to undergo the acetylation process. Today, Accoya is distributed worldwide and is used in various applications.

Environmental Protection

Only those timber species that are abundantly available are used to produce Accoya. Plus, only sustainably managed forests, including FSC® and others which are regionally certified, are harvested for its production. Therefore, all Accoya is compliant with the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR), meaning responsible production is guaranteed.

Acetylation Process

The production of Accoya is based on the process of wood acetylation. Scientists have proven that this modification process is an incredibly effective method to improve the technical properties of wood.

Wood acetylation works by changing the cell structure of the wood whereby the cell walls are “blocked” for moisture absorption. This modification reduces the wood’s ability to absorb water in the cell walls by about 80%, greatly improving dimensional stability, resulting in Accoya requiring less maintenance.

The change in cell walls means that insects and fungi do not recognise Accoya wood as a food source and therefore do not attack.

Accoya Wood Natural Characteristics

Accoya is a fantastic product. Thanks to its stability and durability it can be used in many applications from external cladding to canal linings. Its stability allows it to be secret fixed with little movement if installed correctly.

Accoya’s colouring starts as a pale-yellow uniformed colour and if left untreated will weather down to a silver/ grey. However, we do not advise this specie being left uncoated as mould spurs can attach to the timber’s face.

The acetylation treatment gives Accoya a minimum 50 year out of ground contact and 25 years in ground / freshwater service life. However, TRADA have given this specie a class 1 durability rating, which has led to an expected 70-year service life.

Due to the acetylation process, resin streaks are common, meaning any coatings need to be thought about carefully as some can highlight these streaks. Slight face checks can also develop after machining and coating but these will not affect how the timber performs. However, some coatings can cause a breaking of the film build.

Fixing Accoya Wood

Accoya is suitable for secret fix or face fix profiles. Fixings must be stainless steel (if your project is near a coast then marine grade fixings must be used) at 600mm centres.

When using Accoya for cladding or brise soleil, please ensure the relevant supports at the correct centres are used. Lack of supports can lead to sag, bow, creep and twisting.

Any claims made to VT which are caused from insufficient supports or poor installations will not be accepted.

Corrosion-proof steel fastenings that conform to EN 10088-1such as A2, A4 quality stainless steel is recommended for use with Accoya. Advice on other metals and alloys is included in the Accoya Wood Information Guide.

Gluing Accoya Wood

Both load bearing and non-load bearing applications have been tested using adhesive systems for laminating, finger jointing and frame corner joints.

While good results can be achieved with most common adhesives, PU, EPI, epoxy and PRF give the best results. Results using polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) can vary greatly while MUF adhesives should be avoided. Contact your adhesive supplier for more information.

Coating Accoya Wood

A finish or coating does not need to be applied to Accoya to achieve longevity and dimensional stability. Details on natural weathering of uncoated Accoya can be found in the Wood Information Guide.

Most common coating systems can be used on Accoya wood. Testing has been performed with a full range of oil-based and water-based coating systems. However, leading coating manufacturers have found that film form coating last longer on Accoya.

Accoya Working Qualities

Easy to work with. However, specialised glues are required for gluing and laminating this specie.

Most sections are solid although, some are finger jointed and laminated to achieve large louvre sections. Due to its phenomenal stability this is the best specie to use if laminating.

Accoya wood is indigestible to a wide range of pests creating an effective barrier to attack. Five-year ground contact testing by independent laboratories in Florida USA, Northern Territory Australia and sites across Thailand has shown less termite damage on Accoya than naturally durable species such as FEQ Burmese Teak and Spotted Gum.

Contact and immersion Accoya is not detrimentally affected by saltwater. Field testing of over 10 years immersion have shown some attack on Accoya by marine organisms but less than on other durable woods in the test.

Higher grades are virtually knot free whereas lower grades will contain more knots.

Lengths

Random lengths are supplied however, set lengths may be possible subject to availability – please advise when placing your order as stock will need to be confirmed. Large volume set length requirements may incur a surcharge.

Standard solid lengths:

2.4, 3.0, 3.6, 4.2 & 4.8m

Finger jointed lengths: up to 6m (longer custom lengths are possible).

Fire Treatment

Although Accoya can be fire treated to Euro Class B, we advise, as with all timber species, a wastage factor is added to your requirements. With this specie we recommend that you add a further 5-10%.

With set length requirements this process can cause end split. Therefore, please allow a minimum of 60mm per end to be trimmed after treatment.
